A Clinical Analysis of Intussusception in Infants and Children



Abstract
This article consists of a clinical analysis of 224 cases of intussusception under the age of 5 years treated at the Department of General surgery and Pediatrics of Hae Sung Hospital during the period of 5 years and 7 months from July 1986 to
January
1992.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) On the age and sex distribution, the age incidence under 1 year was the most common (77.7%), and the peak incidence was from 3 to 9 months of age (53.6%). In sex distribution, male to female ratio was 1.3:1.
2) The seasonal distribution was summer (32.6%), spring (23.7%), autumn (22.3%), and winter (21.4%) in order of frequency.
3) As to the etiology of intussusception treated by surgery, idiopathic was the most common (73.3%).
4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were vomiting (81.3%), bloody or mucoid bloody stool (62.9%), abdominal pain (60.7%), abdominal distension (28.6%), abdominal mass (22.3%) and others in order of frequency. The operation rate was significantly
high in
patients with body temperature above than 38¡É (p<0.05).
5) On the hematologic finding, 70.5% was revelaed leukocytosis above 10,000/§§.
6) As to the duration from the onset of the symptoms to admission; 80.3% was within 24 hours. 14.7% was from 24 hours to 48 hours, and 4.8% was over 48 hours.
7) The common anatomical types were ileocecal (45.3%) and ileocolic (20.0%).
8) The success rate of barium reduction was 66.5%.
9) In the method of operation; manual reduction was performed in 93.3% and intestinal resection in 6.7%.
10) The postoperative complication rate was 14.7% (11 cases0, i. e. paralytic ileus (4), wound infection (3), pneumonia (2), and sepis (2).
11) The recurrence rate after barium reduction was 12.7% and after operative manual reduction was 1.3%.
12) The postoperative mortality rate was 2.7%.
